The Look on One's Face

I wouldn’t mask my suffering if I didn’t already know what would happen when I reveal it, if I knew I wouldn’t be bombarded by feelings of pity. Merely imagining the look of pity on one’s face once he/she hears of my “surprising” dilemma regarding mental illness fills me with disgust. I’ve seen it in family members, “friends,” counselors, strangers, etc. I don’t want to see that expression again, ever. Pity is a weak fabrication designed to mimic real compassion and empathy. And I can easily see right through it, making it that much more hurtful.
